justice?
eurobasket is over. previous champions greece, are now 4th, having lost to world champions and hosts spain in the semi final. out of the medals and need to play a pre-tournament to be at the beijing olympics next year, since only the first 3 of this tournament got a fast track ticket to the olympics. it's a pity, but we didn't play well in this tournament, and i guess the team is tired after 3-4 years without a break at all. still, it's a success to be #1 in europe 2 years ago, #2 in teh world last year, and #4 in europe this year. you can't call this a failure, for sure.
as much as greece wanted to win back to back, spain as hosts wanted to be both world and european champions at the same time. they didn't manage to. russia won it, in a thriller game. and boy, was it intense. was it well deserved? i don't know. i believe the best teams in the tournament were spain, lithuania and the third one would be greece. but what i do know is that russia did well. they had to play extra qualifiers to reach this tournament, and they put their best out there and beat the hosts. and i have to say, spain was helped by the referree at the final, and showed some arrogance as well (same as greece did in the world final last year and were seriously kicked by spain back then). russia had to battle against everything, the spectators, a better team, a referee and all the rest. and yet they made it on the last second of the 40 minutes. spain has been in a euro final 6 times and never won it! but that's basketball for you. it's an exciting sport when you can expect the unexpected, like tonight, and like this entire tournament.
from spain's 40 points over germany, to greece's quarter final thriller when they came back from a 16 point deficit to slovenia in 4 minutes, to russia's gold medal! looking forward to the next one!
