coolest few days in london

these last few days in london, looking back at the - almost - nine months i have been living here for, must have been the coolest so far. panos, one of my two longest standing friends, and his girlfriend christina were in town. and much as the times have been intense at work, that didn't stop us from roaming all around london and have a great time!

i've only had a couple of visitors with whom i also had a very good time (athena and kostas) but this was beyond expectations by far. we did some of the touristic stuf i hadn't done, went to madame tussauds, to the aquarium, to portobello market and the london eye. we went to shoot pool, drunk all night with the indian gang, pub crawled, walked around the center, piccadilly, green park, leicester square, covent garden, oxford and regent street, had paella and sangria at st. christopher's place, walked around bayswater, camden and basically coverd lots of miles within only 4 days. miraculously, every morning and despite the hangover, i have made it to wake up at 7 and be at work on time.

i think it's one of the nicest times we've spent together with friends. and for me, playing host to the people that are the closest to me, is always a lot of fun. but there's an added point to this all: to some of my closest friends, who haven't managed to visit me as i always met them at their home place, i have always been living a different kind of life. thessaloniki, athens, the army, rotterdam and now london have all been just mere descriptions of me to them and this includes the aiesec years and all my international friends, whom they have never met. my life is more or less like a story to them, as they have no visual image or experience of what it looks like. that makes me a complete alien when i go back home, as i cannot even discuss my good or bad times in a number of occasions. in any case this was the first time that a friend who has known me for 14 years now, gets exposed to my life abroad and my international friends and gets to see how i live here. and it feels absolutely great.

πεσσιμιστικό αλλά ταιριάζει. με την πόλη που ζω, με τη ρουτίνα που θέλω να σπάσω, με όλο το σκηνικό. το άκουγα σήμερα πηγαίνοντας στη δουλειά, κατά τις 7:30 το πρωί, με το μουντό ουρανό του λονδίνου πάνω απ' το κεφάλι μου. ουσιαστικά χάνεται η αίσθηση του χρόνου όταν δε σου αρέσει η ρουτίνα σου, κι ενώ οι καλές στιγμές είναι αρκετές, δίνεις έμφαση στις κακές. τις καλές τις ξεχνάς πιο εύκολα.

έχω καμιά φορά την αίσθηση ότι η πόλη αυτή με γερνάει. ή η ζωή που ζω τώρα με γερνάει. δεν έχω πρόβλημα να μεγαλώνω, από μικρός μεγάλος ήμουν άλλωστε, και πάντα ήθελα να είμαι. δεν ψάχνω το ελιξίριο της νεότητας. έχω πρόβλημα όμως με το να γερνάω. κι υπάρχει διαφορά ανάμεσα στα δύο, ειδικά όταν το δεύτερο επισπεύδεται λόγω τρόπου ζωής. θα τη βρω την άκρη όμως.

πήρα πάσα από τη silentsoul και πάω κι εγώ να πω 5 πράγματα που δεν ξέρετε για μένα...

1. έχω πατήσει το πόδι μου σε πάνω από 30 χώρες κι έχω φιλοδοξία για πολλές παραπάνω, αλλά δεν έχω πάει ακόμη σε αυτές που θέλω πιο πολύ (μερικές εκ των οποίων είναι η ινδία, η τσεχία, η κίνα, η ιαπωνία, η βραζιλία, η νότιος αφρική κι η αυστραλία).

2. μου πήρε 8 χρόνια να τελειώσω το πανεπιστήμιο, ενώ μέσα σε αυτά τα 8 χρόνια μετακόμισα στην αθήνα για 2 χρόνια και στο rotterdam για άλλους 14 μήνες.

3. έχω μετακομίσει 14 φορές τα τελευταία 11 χρόνια.

4. έπαιζα κάποτε πιάνο και ξεκίνησα να μαθαίνω κιθάρα μόνος μου, αλλά ύστερα από λαϊκή απαίτηση αναγκάστηκα να σταματήσω. πρόκειται για το αντίθετο του encore στις συναυλίες.

5. μικρό (3 χρονών) με πήγαν βόλτα με άλογο στο χωριό στην Κρήτη, και όταν τέλειωσε η βόλτα απαίτησα να βάλουμε κι άλλο τάληρο στο άλογο για να συνεχίσει η βόλτα (το παιδί της πόλης που δε μπορεί να συλλάβει την έννοια του αληθινού αλόγου)

i've been asked by silentsoul to say 5 things you wouldn't know about me, and pass on to another 5 people to do the same. well, here goes:

1. i've set foot on more than 30 countries, but still haven't been to a few of my favourite destinations, which include india, czech republic, china, japan, brasil, south africa and more).

2. it took me a good 8 years to finish university, during which i moved for 2 years to athens (uni was in thessaloniki) and for 14 months to rotterdam.

3. i have moved houses 14 times in the past 11 years.

4. i used to play the piano and started learning how to play the guitar on my own, but had to stop both in order to keep my friends :-), which says a lot about my talent in music.

5. when i was a kid (3 years old), during a visit to our village in Crete, some relatives took me for a ride on a horse. when the ride finished, i demanded that we insert another coin to the horse, so that the ride can continue. :-D. that's a city kid for you...

since the two greek bloggers i know (anastasia and silentsoul) have already played the game, i am passing the ball to:

you know you're alive and you're important when the phone rings at 1am, you wake up and chat to a friend for an hour for something urgent. and when you have people that think (and they're right) that you don't mind being waken up like this, cos you'd do the same when in trouble. call them!

still have the wedding stories pending. it's actually beyond description, but hey, it's been a week and i'll find my way of telling a couple of stories. this weekend has been uneventful, save for sunday. spoke to a couple of people whose voice i had missed after a long while, went out with the indian gang and ripun/nicole who are in town, caught a glimpse of the fireworks in leicester square for the chinese new year, reminded myself that the holiday season for me is only a couple of months away and i still haven't sorted myself out.

there's a bit of a mess in my life currently at all levels, but it at least makes me feel alive.

monday morning thought

on a grey monday, while walking to the office with a hangover, the tune in my head:

never been a great fan of sheryl's but these lyrics kinda describe how sometimes the whole thing of living in the uk is killing me, even though i know i'm happier here than i would be elsewhere at the moment. [also defined as schizophrenia]

off to greece

i know i know - already the 2nd time in less than a month's time and in less than 6 weeks in 2007. but could i be missing my sister's wedding? :) back again monday evening...

βρακί δεν έχει ο κ***ς μας, λουλούδια θέλει ο ψ***ς μας

αν είναι δυνατόν. αυτά που διαβάζει ο κόσμος στο lite και στο metro, τώρα και στο bbc. ένας λαός που ασχολείται (και επιστημονικά πλέον όπως λέει και το άρθρο) με άκυρα πράγματα. δεν κοιτάνε που οι μισοί είναι μόνιμα μεθυσμένοι. τώρα προσπαθούμε να βρούμε επιστημονική εξήγηση και τύπο για το πώς σου την πέφτει ένας/μια μεθυσμένος/η χωρίς να είσαι ο george clooney. απίστευτο? κι όμως. εδώ είναι η απόδειξη.

θα τους βαλσαμώσει?

τελικά είχε δίκιο ο γεωργίου που έλεγε πως στην εθνική ο ρεχάγκελ θα παίζει με τους ίδιους για πάντα και θα τους βαλσαμώσει στο τέλος? έπρεπε να περιμένουμε να μη μπορεί να πάρει τα πόδια του ο βρύζας και να παραιτηθεί ο ζαγοράκης για να φύγουν από την εθνική επιτέλους? ποιος είναι ο λόγος που βγήκε χτες ο σαμαράς στο ημίχρονο (καλύτερος παίκτης της εθνικής στο πρώτο ημίχρονο) κι έμεινε μέσα ο χαριστέας για όλο το παιχνίδι, ο οποίος με τίποτα δε μπορεί να βάλει γκολ? ερωτευμένος είναι ο προπονητής μας με αυτόν τον παίκτη? ήμαρτον πια. ας έπαιζε μάντζιος-σαμαράς μπροστά να δοκιμάσουμε και τπτ άλλο, αφού δε βάζει γκολ ο χαριστέας.

σημειωτέον ότι είμαι από τους αισιόδοξους για εθνική και ρεχάγκελ. αλλά αυτό που είδα χτες βράδυ στο craven cottage (όπου πρώτη φορά είδα εθνική live και είχε πολύ καλή ατμόσφαιρα, παρά το τσουχτερό κρύο) είναι μια ομάδα να μην προχωράει γιατί έχει κόλλημα ο προπονητής, κι είναι κρίμα, γιατί αυτός την έφτιαξε in the first place. ελπίζω να βελτιωθεί η κατάσταση και να πάμε καλύτερα.

ravenscourt park in london, near hammersmith. surprisingly, the weather on saturday was great, so i decided to run towards that direction and check out the park, at the same time combining this with a stroll and a bit of reading. was well worth it, and when spring comes, if i'm still in the neighbourhood, this is going to be combined with some basketball playing in that park as well!
